High Rock, Portmarnock

This photo was taken at sunrise just after 5.40am. These sunrise colours were achieved by the sun reaching under low level clouds at the horizon creating this “sky on fire” effect. It creates this warm mood which helps this composition feel very peaceful.

Doolough Valley, Connemara

The lake, curving away into the mountains with the two tied up boats, lends a sense of journey to the image. The photo was taken with a long exposure of 51 seconds to smooth out the water. I was really looking to create an image with very little distraction with a clear sense of direction. The choice of going with black and white also lends to the simplicity of the image.

Doo Lough Valley Pier Connemara landscape

Doolough Valley, Connemara

This picture shows the diversity of Doolough beauty. With tall trees and a stunning small stone pier surrounded by colourful foliage the site is blessed with breath taking beauty.

Ballydowane Bay, Co.Waterford

This image is a very simple composition, with a bird perched on top of the sea stack, saturated soft greys and moody skies which all combine to make this photo work. It delivers a low energy with a beautiful calming feel. The sea stack in silhouette complimented by its own shadow draws the eyes in.

I used a 30 second shutter speed to calm the sea and to smooth out waves. This ensures the focus on the sea stack. The bird remained so still for the 30 seconds that I think it deserves a positive mention!

Tibradden Wood, Dublin

This photo shows a light display that I was very fortunate to capture. The original shot I had planned that day just didn’t work out and on the way back I spotted the possibility of the light breaking through these trees and waited for the sun to drop.

The result created an image with deep contrast and rich winter foliage colours, a peaceful image with simple natural beauty.

Kinard Beach, Dingle Peninsula

Like many sites around Dingle you can lose many hours just taking it in. Kinard beach has layers of natural beauty, a small intimate beach which looks across at Bulls Head, a sea stack that closely resembles the Rook on a chess board and a deeply carved shoreline pulling all this together. I had tried to capture this photo before but I didn’t get the colour in the sky I wanted but on this morning fortunately it all came together to create an almost watercolour look.

Copper Coast, Waterford Milky Way

I have been always fascinated with what’s above our heads in the night sky, more so what we can’t see. After some planning research I knew the Milky Way would line up with the sea stack on this night.  With a very long exposure of 25 seconds the detail of the Milky Way can be seen.  A magic light display.

Kilfarrasy Beach, Co.Waterford

Some scenes can look stunning during the night hours and I had long planned for this shot hoping that I would get the perfect conditions for the full moon night shot.

With a clear sky and bright full moon hovering over the arch and low wind conditions I was able to get this very beautiful scene.

The camera shutter exposure was 25 seconds, allowing enough light in to create this image.

Ballydowane, Co Waterford

This photo was taken just before 1.30 pm on a very cold January day, Standing in the Copper Coast sea with feet wet and head on winds made it feel a lot colder and more of a challenge to stay and wait for the right conditions. I had been there since 8.00 am that morning and was confident that I might have at least one photograph that worked from the right hand side of the bay. Over 5 hours later and now working on this photograph situated on the opposite side of Ballydowane Bay, a few very important factors fell into place. I wanted the sun to gently shine light highlights on to the sea stack and cliffs. For this to happen and to not have aggressive highlights and shadows a light cloud cover was needed to come in to diffuse the strong sun light.

At exactly 1:29.49 all these factors came together. I love how this photo worked out, the mood and atmosphere represent what I saw with the naked eye and beat my expectation of what could happen.

Devils Horn, Dingle

These sea stacks are one of many incredible sites at Dunmore Head, Dingle. I decided to try and shoot these from an elevated view point to pronounce the angular nature of the Devils Horn stacks.

This image is made by using a shutter speed bracketing technique to allow longer exposure for the water. This smooths out the water which allows more attention be drawn towards the sea stacks.

Fisherman’s Hut, Connemara

Connemara has places like this spread throughout the county. What I really enjoy about this image is its simplicity and beauty. This is a well known fisherman’s hut shared by many throughout the years.
The shutter was open for eight seconds to smooth out the water in contrast to the cottage’s rough edged walls.
The sun was high and strong which can sometimes lead to difficult lighting conditions but in this image I think the strong light leads to strong vibrant colours which work with the scene.

Ballydowane Beach, Co. Waterford

This beach sits on the Copper Coast in Waterford and by comparison to other beaches on the Copper Coast is relatively unknown as a tourist destination. In conversation with people who I have met there they all use words like mythical, peaceful or surreal to describe Ballydowane. This photo was just a case of waiting for the sun to be diffused by the low clouds and cast a soft light

Cloghleagh, County Wicklow

You could easily drive by this site on the way to better known locations in Sally Gap or Glendalough for example.

In mid August this location offers stunning greens which shade this site beautifully. The water typically has a lower volume which for me helps to illustrate its curving path. The trees exposed root structures elevate the detail in this image. I allowed the highlights to be aggressive throughout this image to help promote the depth in the scene..

Ashleam Cliffs, Achill

The White Cliffs of Ashleam Bay is one of those places which can be viewed from many different areas and still present incredible beauty. For this photo I wanted to capture the energy that is almost ever-present here. The birds skirting off the tops of the waves, white foam waves bashing the shore and a threatening looking sky all come together to make this image..

Poolbeg Lighthouse, Dublin

On this morning there was very heavy fog, so dense in fact that only minutes before you couldn’t even see the lighthouse. Then, as it was clearing, I snapped this. The fog that remained helped to add a atmosphere that, for me, made the composition work.

Ballydavid Head/The Three Sisters

This photo features the Three Sisters shot from Ballydavid Head in Dingle. Ballydavid Head is a stunning place to be with its old ruins and majestic elevated 360 degree views of the Dingle peninsula. It is impossible not to look across and shoot the Three Sisters view from this location.

Dún Laoghaire Pier

This photo was taken during storm Isha. There were gale force winds that day. Inside the Dún Laoghaire pier there was some shelter to be had but beyond the pier walls the water was far more aggressive producing white sheets of water spray.

Coolalingo Waterfalls, Glenmalure, Wicklow, Ireland

This amazing location is just outside Glenmalure village, Wicklow. It sits below the roadside making it easy to walk past, a hidden gem for sure. During the summer months It presents a very tropical feel with three waterfalls side by side surrounded by deep green foliage and great rock display. A canopy of tall trees offers shelter from heavy rain.  I used a slow shutter speed to allow the water to have a smoother flow. I think it works well for this image creating a dreamy look to the photo.

Hook Lighthouse, Wexford

This is the oldest working lighthouse in the world and just an incredible sight to see. The bird heading towards the lighthouse across that moody sky is just a piece of luck that helped to finish this photo.

Howth Lighthouse, Dublin

This is Howth Lighthouse with a deep orange glow sunrise silhouette. I had planned a sunrise photo that morning but had no idea the rich colours that would arise. The bird and the very kind gentleman who walked into the frame add great dimension to the image. The sunstar drawing the eye in towards the centre balances off the image beautifully.

Dooagh, Achill

This photogragh was taken at Purteen Harbour looking towards Dooagh mountain, Achill. The truth behind this photo is I was looking to shoot Cathedral Rocks, Keel bay which is exactly 180 degrees in the other direction. The light just wasn’t working and I couldn’t get the composition I wanted so in turning around I was greeted with this light display at Dooagh mountain.
